Report: LATAM Telecoms 2022
With nearly USD 100bn revenues in 2021, traditional network operators in Latin America account for only one third of the US and half of Europe’s telecommunications revenues. However, a high population, a relatively strong and growing middle-class, and a high penetration rate of mobile phones makes the region attractive for telecommunications, despite the structural challenges. With relatively stable exchange rates, revenues in the region in USD expanded rapidly between 2016 and 2019. The COVID crisis broke that growth dynamic, and revenues dropped by 3% in 2020, to recover in 2021, expanding by a mere 2%, which can be partly explained by depreciation of local currencies. Similarly to the rest of the world, technological changes have led to the emergence of new companies (mainly Over-The-Top companies, OTTs) which are challenging the dominance of traditional players.
